Streaming platforms, including Netflix, are gearing up for the spooky season by bulking up their horror and thriller selections. The streaming giant currently features dozens of scaries in its selection, including more recent movies like Barbarian and classics like Jaws, which just turned 50.
In September, subscribers can look forward to new horror films like Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Francis Ford Coppolas gothic horror starring Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Keanu Reeves, and Anthony Hopkins, the horror comedy The Blackening, and the Saw-esque horror Escape Room. Talk to Me
Talk to Me is a 2023 supernatural horror film produced by A24 and directed by Aussie duo Danny and Michael Philippou. The film stars Sophie Wilde and follows a group of teens who discover they can contact spirits using a severed and embalmed hand. The film received positive reviews, boasting a 94% critics’ score on the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. It also became A24’s highest-grossing horror film, surpassing Ari Aster’s Hereditary. A sequel, Talk 2 Me, is reportedly in the works.
Barbarian
Run don’t walk to watch Barbarian before it leaves Netflix on August 31. The 2022 film stars Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgård, and Justin Long, and was written and directed by Zach Cregger, who also wrote the hit horror Weapons, which is currently in theaters. The film is an instant classic, seamlessly blending horror and comedy, taking the viewer on a wild ride of twists and turns while exploring themes of misogyny and abuse. The film boasts an impressive critics’ score of 92%.
Us
Us is Jordan Peele’s second horror film after his Best Picture-nominated film Get Out. The film, which has a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, stars Lupita Nyong’o in a powerhouse dual performance, along with Winston Duke, Elisabeth Moss, and Tim Heidecker. The story follows a family who are attacked by a group of dpplegängers, aka the “Tethered.” The stylized horror speckled with 1980s iconography features a plot twist that will leave your jaw on the floor and you reaching for the remote to start the movie over from the beginning. Us is only available until August 31.
Under the Shadow
Under the Shadow is a 2016 Persian-language psychological horror film written and directed by Iranian-born filmmaker Babak Anvari. The film boasts a rare 99% on Rotten Tomatoes and has been compared to A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night and The Babadook. It is equally terrifying and thought-provoking as it explores feminist themes through the supernatural. The film follows a mother and daughter who are haunted by a mysterious entity in 1980s Tehran during the War of the Cities.
Cam
This 2018 techno-horror film holds a solid 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. Cam is directed by Daniel Goldhaber and written by Isa Mazzei, based partially on her own experiences working as a camgirl. This highly stylized film follows Alice, whose online persona, Lola, is taken over by a sinister lookalike. Star Madeline Brewer’s performance and the film’s portrayal of sex work have been praised by critics.
